Automobile Registration System

The automobile registration system is based on the Road Vehicles Act and requires that the vehicles (excluding mini-sized
vehicles, special small vehicles and motorbikes) obtain registration number plates and be registered in the vehicle file.
When registering a new vehicle at a Transport Bureau Branch, the applicant must prove his/her ownership and completion of importing procedures, presenting the application forms and the vehicle.
Newly registered vehicles will receive a new registration number plate, sealed by an authorized sealer.
However, the automobile which received Type-Designation under which the vehicle is exempted from the physical inspection through the presentation of the Completion Inspection Certificate, may have the registration number plate sealed by the dealers who have been authorized by the Transport Branch Officer.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) launched a new One-Stop Service(OSS)in December 2005, aiming to extend it across the country by 2008. This service allows all the procedures required of car owners (vehicle inspection and registration, storage location certificate, and automobile-related tax payment, etc.) to be performed online, reducing the burden on the applicants.
